Oliver likes his hens happy.
Oliver Bora began his journey of sustainable agriculture with a crowdfunding campaign during his last year at high school. His flock has grown to 2000 happy, healthy hens, whose eggs are stocked by organic and wholefood stores throughout the Northern Rivers.
Oliver’s passion is in creating zero-waste practices at his farm, where his hens help to regenerate the land they live on.
As a young entrepreneur, Oliver strives to support other young farmers with inspiration and education.
Zero-waste for the win
To run a farm sustainably you need to think holistically. Zero-waste agriculture aims to optimise natural ecosystems to produce product with little to no waste.
This kind of regenerative agriculture uses land management systems that improve soil health, store carbon, increase biodiversity, and re-purpose waste in order to renew the land and raise livestock.
Oliver’s hens each have at least 4 square meters of fresh pasture to roam at The Farm, just outside of Byron Bay in the lush Northern Rivers of NSW.
Every two weeks the hens are moved, providing them with fresh forage whilst allowing the soil to regenerate. This healthy diet means their eggs have more Omega 3 than standard eggs, making them tastier and healthier. The waste from the hens is also turned into charcoal fertiliser and feed, creating a closed-loop production cycle.
